According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the median age for first time marriages has been rising for decades. Many women are waiting until they are more established in their careers. Sometimes it’s just the challenge of finding Mr. Right that is resulting in women getting married at a later age. "People are postponing marriage until everything in their lives is working in order. The order means after you've finished your education, perhaps after beginning your career, and increasingly after you've lived with your partner. People are postponing marriage until they think they're ready for it." (Sooner vs. later: Is there an ideal age for first marriage? By Sharon Jayson, USA Today, 11/9/08)
According to the U.S. Census Bureau the median age for the first time marriage for females went from 22 in 1990 to 26 in 2010. For many of the brides to be I know it’s later than 26. I was 41 by the time I tied the knot for the first time (and only time I hope). I considered just going to City Hall but decided against it. I thought with a few changes from the traditional wedding it could be interesting. I chose a long champagne colored dress at a fraction of the cost of a wedding gown. I added a veil and I looked just like a typical bride. I used some of the money saved and splurged on some beautiful rhinestone studded shoes. I also added my mom’s antique jewelry as something borrowed. This was also a great way to include my mom who is deceased.
Dare I ask my sisters who are in their 50’s and my friends who are in their 40’s as well to be bridesmaids? I cringed at the thought and knowing them so would they. Instead I had several beautiful little girls as my wedding party. My granddaughter and great-nieces were all flower girls. I even had a female ring bearer, another one of my great-nieces.
